What is the History of the Honda Civic?

The Honda Civic arrived in North America at the perfect time 1973. The oil crisis of the 1970's was in full effect and Americans were craving more fuel efficient options for transportation. While Ford and Chevy had attempted to offer compact, gas sipping cars in the past (e.g. Ford's Pinto and Chevrolet's Vega), the Honda Civic found much more popularity and sales success in America. The 1973 Honda Civic, which offered a seating capacity for four occupants, had a style that may have been a bit on the "quirky" side, but no one could argue with the value and efficiency it provided. Honda continued to refine and tweak the Civic over the next years, but the most notable change to the model came in 1981.

It was during this time that Honda released the first four-door Civic model. This was an important milestone in the car's history, as it marked the beginning of its evolution away from being solely an "economy" car.  It also marked a shift in the vehicle's size. In fact, by 1984, the Civic Sedan and Wagon were almost of equal size to that of Honda's Accord model. This increase in the Civic's size and features would be a continuing theme over the next two decades. The car sold well year after year and became one of the most popular vehicles in the market.

If there was any "knock" on Civic throughout the years, it was on the conservative exterior styling aspects of the vehicle. That all changed, however, with the launch of the redesigned 2016 Civic model. The car featured aggressive, sport-inspired styling to complement its legendary reputation for quality, reliability and value.
