Updates For 2023
The Pilot has been entirely redesigned for the 2023 year model and has updated styling to match the newest models in the Honda lineup. It has a more rugged overall appearance with its boxier styling. A new 10-speed transmission replaced the nine-speed transmission and takes the Pilot to a whole new level.
The Explorer only welcomed a new Red Jewel Metallic paint color to the mix. The midsize SUV has no changes in capability, performance, or technology for 2023.
Interior
The Pilot has designed its interior with your family in mind. You can comfortably seat up to eight occupants depending on the configuration of its three rows, and you have the option of having second-row captain's chairs. When properly equipped the second-row middle seat portion can be removed and stored under the floor. The Pilot also has plenty of cupholders for your family with a boasting eight cupholders that can hold drinks as big as 32-ounce water bottles. There's no need to worry about cargo space because the Pilot has plenty of space for groceries or luggage.
Critics found that the interior of the Explorer was uninspired, and while the front two seats were comfortable, the second and third row was cramped. When it came to space the Explorer falls short, and while the headroom feels like a lot of space, its primarily due to the low-mounted seat. If you're traveling for long distances the Explorer wouldn't be comfortable for the occupants in the back. Critics discovered the interior also has plastic materials and the optional vertical touchscreen on the dash is a bit unsightly.

The Pilot comes standard with a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and is accompanied by a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, but if you're looking for a bigger screen the Pilot has the option for a 9.0-inch infotainment display. The infotainment system is family-friendly and easy to use and also comes with both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. The Pilot also equips all its models with Honda Sensing which is its driver-assistance feature. The Honda Sensing includes features like automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and more.
The Explorer didn't impress with its 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment due to its lack of intuitiveness and rotatory controller. Some critics even said that it's not worth getting the optional 10.1-inch vertical-oriented screen because its skinnier profile does not work well with the other technology in the vehicle.
