2020 Honda CR-V vs. 2020 Subaru Forester

When you're shopping for compact crossover SUVs that are reliable, durable, and value-packed, two brands probably come to mind: Honda and Subaru. These Japanese automakers produce two of the most popular SUVs on the market today - the Honda CR-V and the Subaru Forester. Both are classified as compact crossover SUVs and have similar offerings as direct competitors in the market, but which deserves a spot in your driveway? Let's compare their key features to find out.

Performance

One of the most lauded features of compact crossovers is their peppy performance that offers car-like drivability. The 2020 CR-V is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that produces 190 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. of torque; and the Forester runs on a 2.5-liter making 182 horsepower and 176 lb.-ft. of torque. Though the Subaru offers one more pound per foot of torque, the CR-V delivers a more powerful, energetic performance overall. The two SUVs are rated extremely similarly for their fuel economy estimates. Additionally, the CR-V also offers an even more efficient hybrid powertrain option while the Forester does not.

Interior Comparison

The most popular feature of SUVs is by far the unmatched space they offer. With far more passenger and cargo volume than even full-size sedans, there's certainly no shortage of space in either the Honda CR-V or the Subaru Forester. Though both are roomy, the CR-V offers more legroom in the front and the rear, offering relief for taller passengers.

The CR-V makes a more efficient use of its space, and offers more cargo capacity than the Forester. When the second row is upright, you'll find 39 cubic-feet of space in the CR-V versus 35 cubic-feet in the Forester. Stowing the second row opens up 76 cubic-feet of space in both vehicles, enough for transporting large sporting gear or even moderate-sized furniture.

The infotainment suites of the two vehicles are similar - both offer touchscreens, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto. However, the base touchscreen of the CR-V is 7-inches compared to 6.5 in the Forester, with a larger touchscreen only available in upper trims of the Subaru.

Safety Features

When driver assistance suites were newer on the market, there was often a clear choice between automakers who were including the new technology and those who were saving it for upper trims or not including it at all. Now, as these reassuring safety features have been around for a few years, nearly every automaker includes them standard, as is the case with both Honda and Subaru. Still the CR-V offers a clear edge over the Forester in terms of safety.

The 2020 CR-V is standardly equipped with a collision mitigation braking system, road departure mitigation system, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, and a lane keeping assist system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on all but the base LX trim. By comparison, the 2020 Forester comes standard with adaptive cruise control, lane assist and sway warning, pre-collision braking, and pre-collision throttle management. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are not available until the second highest Limited trim in the Forester.
